Jonzi D Productions Presents Markus The Sadist

As Hip Hop culture evolves and continues to court controversy, Jonzi Productions returns to the Bloomsbury Theatre with Markus The Sadist, following a successful national tour last October. A bold new theatre show, this lively production takes a wry look at both celebrity culture within the Hip Hop ‘industry’ and the manipulative players masterminding urban myths.

Markus The Sadist tells the story of a talented young emcee from humble UK origins, earning his accolades at local battle championships as he sweeps the board with his raw, precocious skills.

Attracting the attentions of record companies and unscrupulous management, Markus has to agree to certain conditions in order to capitalise on the offer of a lifetime – He must sound American, mention his sponsors and predictably have a gang affiliation. After signing and reaching the dizzy heights of rap superstardom, this story takes an unexpected turn as Markus decides to switch styles at the height of his popularity…..

Conceived and directed by Jonzi D who continues to set a precedent within Hip Hop theatre and dance, this modern rap fable includes brand new music from MOBO award winning jazz innovator Soweto Kinch. A vibrant cast of emcees and actors collectively portray a diverse array of characters with an almost entirely rhymed script. The lead role comes courtesy of Ashley “Bashy” Thomas , currently one of the UK’s most exciting young talents conquering both music and acting most notably in Mo Ali’s new gangsta-film SHANK. Bashy also joins the esteemed Gorillaz on their new album Plastic Beach. The dynamic cast of Markus The Sadist also features award winning including rap comedian Rob Broderick and Nolan
Weekes (Poetry collective 3+1).

“This thought-provoking production is a definite must see!” The Voice
“The show was great man. Intelligent, Funny, True. Need more a dat.” Benjamin Zephaniah
“An almost surreal comic high…” The Times
